Campfire Stories
Cultivating connection for a global company's remote employees

Google —
Campfire Stories
Stories connect us and tell us who we are. This is as true for a 3-unit friendship as it is for a global powerhouse like Google. And, in 2020, we really, really needed connection.
We collaborated with our longstanding partner Google to uncover the stories that unite, educate, and inspire their global team of engineers, making the world a little less lonely by gathering around the proverbial campfire and listening, learning, and connecting to each other.

The Ask

Set a new vision and model for global collaboration at Google, starting with a storytelling lab that connects engineers through a tangible community, a platform for sharing knowledge, and as a constant source of inspiration.

Reigniting engagement
We wanted to create a spark and fan the flames of friendship, bringing together Googlers and Noodlers from every corner of the world around a shared purpose. As remote work was in full flight, the challenge was to ensure that employees felt heard, seen, and understood, and that internal culture and communication reflected this new way of working and responded in-kind.
The Idea
Stories are the invisible coding that connects people and drives culture forward. Making this coding visible through a storytelling platform fosters belonging and aligns community with communication.
Tapping internal talent
Googlers are good at their job. They’re also good at playing guitar, doodling, frying a perfect three-egg omelet, and recording voiceovers in their closet. We put out an internal call and received talent in droves, leveraging the collective acumen at Google to conceive, produce, and populate the content for Google Campfire.

Reflecting the full, authentic experiences of Googlers themselves is the heart of this platform, reveling in the diverse stories, backgrounds, and abilities that make a Google community flourish.
Big Love
A light that never goes out
We positioned Campfire as an ever expressive, ever evolving storytelling platform that prioritized co-creation as a source of ongoing internal inspiration and connection.

Storytelling at Scale
From creating a unique series of docu-style content, to building multiple templates for better and faster efficiencies, our goal was to set Google up with a scalable platform that was innovative, intuitive, and flexible for a myriad of storytelling needs.
This project reinforced the importance of adaptability, collaboration, and trust in navigating uncertain times, and reminded us that we’re capable of lighting our own campfires and inviting people to pull up and share a story.

By the Numbers
Done
Remotely collaborated with team members across Los Angeles, Portland, Austin, and San Francisco to co-create a storytelling platform to connect employees globally.
